4 Benefits of a good employee learning experience

The workplace learning experience has been flipped on its head over the past few years. It used to be sufficient for HR professionals to provide the same generic courses to their workers, but now employees expect more—a truly personalized learning experience that aligns with how they want to consume information and content.

Thanks to mobile phones and personalized online experiences, people are used to seeing customized content—and accessing it anytime, anywhere. As a result, they now look for the same level of accessibility, relevance and control when it comes to learning. A top-down approach no longer works; employees now expect to be in the driver’s seat when it comes to learning.

This shift has caused employers to allocate more funding to their learning strategies, with U.S. employers spending over $6.8 billion on learning content every year, according to a Bersin report. But the investment pays off. Here are four reasons why managers should start focusing more on the employee learning experience.

1) Top Talent Will Come Your Way

Competition for top talent is tougher than ever, and finding the best candidates is increasingly difficult. If you refocus the learning experience on the learner, however, you will attract the top candidates.

Employees seek out positions where they will have an opportunity to learn and grow in their careers. In fact, according to the LinkedIn Job Switchers Report 2016, six out of 10 workers will join an organization because it offers career development prospects.

Pew Research also found that millennials now make up the largest share of the workforce and will eventually begin to dominate it as baby boomers retire. Competition to find the best millennial workers out there is stiff, and to attract the top employees, organizations must have a learner-first philosophy.

Learning is particularly important to millennials—fifty-nine percent say that skill development is an extremely important consideration when applying for a position. Employers must cater to these millennial learning styles if they want to keep up with the changing workforce.

2) Onboarding Will Springboard Engagement

Employees need to be thoroughly trained not only at the beginning of their jobs, but also as they grow in their positions and gain new responsibilities. By investing in inspiring and practical learning courses for their workforce that start during onboarding but last beyond that period, organizations can jumpstart engagement—and ensure that it has a lasting effect.

Starting with a strong focus on learning will set employees on the right path to success, but complementing that process with ongoing learning opportunities will promote employee engagement and create a strong workplace culture. Organizations that have a robust learning environment can boost productivity by up to 50 percent, IBM research revealed.

3) Talent Retention Will Increase

One in three companies struggle to retain their top employees. The reason? They're not given enough opportunity to move forward in their careers.

More than half of millennials say that career progression is the most attractive quality they see in a job, a Gallup poll revealed, and 87 percent consider career growth and development opportunities to be important. But this isn't just true for millennials—69 percent of non-millennials agree with these findings.

A learning experience platform that offers these opportunities can help companies satisfy and retain employees that are most likely to job-hop.
