How learning playlists can improve the employee experience

Today's workers crave personalized learning and growth as part of their employee experience. Millennials want constant opportunities to learn more and gain the knowledge to get ahead in their careers. According to one Gallup poll, 87 percent of millennials say development is important in a job, and 59 percent report that opportunities to grow and learn are crucial when they apply for a job.

The poll further states that millennials do not want to sit around and wait for learning opportunities. “Millennials want managers to find ways to invest in their futures, hone their skills and coach them to become the best workers they can be, starting [immediately]," according to the findings. And learning matters to other generations too—44 percent of Gen Xers and 41 percent of baby boomers also said it was important.

One way to satisfy these needs is to provide employees with a learning experience platform and, specifically, with learning playlists.

What Are Learning Playlists?
Learning playlists are collaborative, employee-driven learning experience platforms that are similar to Spotify. Learning playlists typically offer core company courses as well as courses that employees can choose on their own.

Employers can also give employees a clear path to success by showing them exactly what courses and skills they'll need to get ahead in their specific careers, and curating playlists based on these requirements.

The Benefits of Learning Playlists

Learning playlists enable workers to learn in a personalized way. Workers can add proprietary and professional courses, as well as unofficial learning content they find on the web through YouTube or their favorite blogs and news sites.

On a personalized learning playlist platform, employees can also see what courses their colleagues have taken. This is highly valuable, because an entry-level worker, for example, can view what courses a mid-level employee took to make it to her position. The entry-level worker can then add these courses to his learning playlist and ensure he is doing continuous learning that positions him for a possible future promotion.

Playlists can also improve employee experience because they promote conversations and build relationships across the organization. For example, employee X may add an informative and interesting class to her playlist, and employee Y will learn valuable new skills from it. He will want to thank employee X and pick her brain for future recommendations. Employees will also interact with each other by sharing their favorite content and having others respond, subscribe and comment.

Plus, helping each other discover useful content creates a feeling of validation for employees, and gives them a sense of ownership over their employee experience.
