Onboarding best practices: how to onboard new employees

So you've just hired a new employee—congrats! It may have taken a lot of work to find and hire the right person for the job, but your work has only just begun. Now it's time for the onboarding process to start. To ensure that your new employee properly ingratiates into your company and stays for the long-term, you need to utilize a few onboarding best practices.
Why Are Onboarding Best Practices Important?
If you have onboarding programs that provide employees with excellent experiences, they are more likely to stay with your company. According to a Society for Human Resource Management report, 69 percent of workers are more likely to be with a company for at least three years after they have a great employee onboarding process.
But why does it matter if employees stay long-term, or if turnover is high? Couldn't you just prepare for departures and hire new workers?
It's not wise to simply work around or plan for high turnover. Hiring new employees all the time is not only bad for company culture and morale—it's also expensive. According to the SHRM, the average cost-per-hire is more than $4,000.
By focusing on onboarding new employees and improving your onboarding programs, you can ensure that your workforce will want to stay at your company for years to come. Here are some best practices you should follow when onboarding new employees:
1) Delegate Your Tasks Internally
There are numerous people involved with onboarding new employees. There is the human resources department, where one or more people will determine the new hires' salary, benefits package, vacation time and more. The legal team will take care of any contracts and paperwork, while IT will set up the employee with logins and necessary computer equipment. Then there is the team on which the employee will actually be working—someone in that department will have to determine what kind of training is needed and what tasks the employee will be doing.
You need to keep everyone organized and make sure that all tasks are being completed in a timely manner. Otherwise, it may take longer to onboard a new employee and the disorganization could trickle down to the worker. Automate workflows to ensure that your onboarding team is completing their tasks as quickly and smoothly as possible.
2) Provide Employees With Personalized Welcome Pages
Just like your onboarding team, your new hires also need automated workflows. As soon as they come into the office for their first day, employees should be given a login to an electronic onboarding platform where they see a welcome page, tasks they need to complete, people they have to meet with and HR/legal paperwork they must sign.
This platform can show employees how much of a task they have left to do before they can move on to something else. This way, they can take the reigns with their onboarding, and not wait around for somebody to tell them what they need to do.
3) Show Employees Learning and Engagement Opportunities
All employees, even new ones, want opportunities to learn and engage at work. They also want to be in control of their learning, taking on new courses and gaining skills so they can move up within the company and in their career. Employee onboarding best practices include putting learning and engagement opportunities into your new hires' hands.
On an onboarding platform, they should be given the chance to enroll in courses, read, listen to and watch informative content and share learnings with other employees. Show them the development opportunities from day one, and they will be more likely to stay with you in the long-term.
