This Week on HR Labs: Adaptability Starts with the Employee

Cornerstone Editors

Cornerstone is proud to bring you Season 2 of HR Labs, a podcast about learning hosted by our very own Chief Marketing and Strategy Officer Heidi Spirgi. This season, we’re exploring the importance of learning and development as businesses shift their priorities from shareholders to stakeholders—particularly in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. Find it on Apple Podcasts and everywhere else you listen to podcasts.

To move through the current pandemic crisis, and well beyond it, companies need to build adaptability into their company’s DNA.

On this episode of HR Labs, we hear from the adaptability expert: Heather McGowan. She’s a future of work strategist, speaker and author who recently published a book about adaptability with co-author, Chris Shipley. In "The Adaptation Advantage," they explore the accelerated change industries were experiencing even before the advent of COVID-19. And the key to keeping with this pace of change starts by supporting adaptation at the individual level. We have to put employees first, and this begins by rethinking everything from how we talk about our identity at work to how we talk about learning in the workplace. And doing that requires a different type of leadership—one that, as McGowan puts it, inspires human potential.

One of those leaders is Katie Lamkin, Chief Human Resources Officer at financial services company RSM. The company has built its culture around putting employees first, from making them feel empowered to bring their whole selves to work, to providing learning and development opportunities for their growth. It’s this strategy that will help RSM weather the pandemic today and continue to thrive in the future.

We hope you’ll tune into this week’s episode to hear more about strategies for helping employees—and by extension, companies—adapt to change.
