How to Build a Culture that Embraces Technology

Companies, departments and people all have personalities; some are tech-savvy and seek out the latest-and-greatest technologies at every turn. However, others need a little coaxing and coaching in the realm of technology.

For those companies in the latter camp (and often it's even departments), it's important to shift paradigms from fear-based to enthusiastic about what technology can do to improve the workplace.

To help get laggards on board, here are ways to frame the benefits of technology. The results should help build a culture of people who welcome the latest tech with open arms.

Big Data Will Save You Time

Big data has changed the way businesses understand their customers, market to audiences and communicate with current and prospective employees. By providing a tremendous amount of insight, big data allows professionals to make decisions backed by concrete information and more efficient processes.

Big data also gives Human Resource (HR) departments a fact-based view of the current workforce, identifying emerging trends and offering predictive analytics. This kind of forward-thinking information allows for risk-management conversations and action. When analytics allow HR leaders to identify employees who require additional training, or pinpoint teams that may be struggling, swift action can be taken, saving time and money.

Social Media Will Speed Up Communication

This is one of those cases of, "everyone is doing it." And that's the truth. Here are a few social media facts from Brandwatch:

  • There are 2.3 billion active social media users.
  • Internet users have an average of 5.54 social media accounts.
  • 1 million new active mobile social users are added every day: 12 each second.
  • Facebook Messenger and Whatsapp handle 60 billion messages a day.

In 2015, 75 percent of Internet users worldwide had accessed messaging services on mobile device, mainly because of its strong connection to smartphone growth and messaging apps.

I strongly believe that social media can change the face of an organization both internally and externally. Mobile and social media's instant messaging options can drastically speed up communication between employees, whether across the hall or across the globe. Anyone who doesn't want to acknowledge the possibilities in bringing social media into the fold is missing the boat; especially when it comes to the speed of instant messaging.

The Cloud Will Clear Out Your File Cabinet

The cloud is another innovation that's changing how workplaces function. Collection and storage of data have always been a nemesis for HR professionals, often meaning hard drive space, piles of paper, filing cabinets, desk drawers and overall confusion and duplicitous activity. The past was full of inefficiencies, security problems, loss of data and overall chaos.

Since information can now be stored in the cloud, we can all take a few deep breaths—like those after a deep spring-cleaning session. Employee information such as tax forms, payroll data, performance reviews and more can be archived and organized in one secure location. There are infinite possibilities for cloud storage, but with the right system, it is safe, reliable and easy to organize. Who can really say no to that?

Let's not blame technology trepidation on certain generations, industries or personality types. It happens everywhere. But with the right coaxing, all workplaces can function better with the latest tools and platforms.
